Kana Koneko — Privacy Policy
Last updated: 2026-07-04. Prepared for the initial worldwide release. Hosted at
https://privacy.kondev.app (the in-app link) and to be linked in the Google Play
listing before publishing.
Summary
Kana Koneko is local-first: your learning progress, settings, and your Koneko's
name stay on your device by default. We have no ads, no advertising or tracking
SDKs, and never sell your data.
Three features send data off the device, and each is described in full below:
- Optional anonymous crash/error diagnostics — technical-only, no personal
data, on by default, can be turned off.
- Optional Google Drive backup — off until you sign in; backs up only your
learning progress to your own Google Drive.
- Classrooms — if you join or run a class, class-related data (a teacher's
Google account details, or a student's chosen nickname and quiz results) is
stored on our server so a teacher can follow their students' progress.
The app is intended for users aged 13 and older (see "Age & Classrooms").
What the app stores on your device (default)
- Learning progress (which characters you have practiced and how well you know them).
- App settings (theme, accent colour, sound/haptics, daily goal).
- The optional name you give the Koneko mascot.
This data never leaves your device unless you enable Google Drive backup or use
Classrooms. Uninstalling the app deletes on-device data.
What the app does NOT do
- No account is required to learn; no advertising or user-tracking SDKs; no
behavioural profiling.
- No access to contacts, location, camera, or microphone. (Files: only a music
file you explicitly pick for optional background music — copied into the app,
never uploaded.)
- We do not sell personal data or share it with third parties for advertising.
Optional Google Drive backup
If you choose "Sign in with Google" for backup (Settings → Backup & sync), the
app backs up your learning progress and settings to your own Google Drive
("app data" folder):
- What is stored: learning progress and app settings only — no name, contacts,
location, or payment data.
- Where: in your personal Google Drive, under your own Google account. We do
not host this backup; it lives in your Drive.
- What Google receives: signing in shares your name, email address, and profile
picture with the app per Google's standard consent screen. We use the sign-in
only to access your Drive app-data folder.
- Control: it is off until you sign in; you can sign out at any time, and you
can delete the backup from your Google Drive.
Classrooms
Classrooms let a teacher run a class and follow students' progress. This feature is
only used if you actively join or create a class, and the class data is stored
on our own server (class.kondev.app), isolated from other services.
If you are a teacher and sign in with Google to create/manage a class:
- What is stored on our server: your Google account email, display name, and a
Google account identifier (to own your classes), plus the classes, assignments,
announcements, and grades you create.
- Why: to let you build a class, share a join code, and see your students' results.
- Control / deletion: you can delete a class at any time from the app, which
permanently removes that class and all of its students, assignments, and grades.
If you are a student and join a class with a code + nickname (no account):
- What is stored on our server: the nickname you choose (please do not use
your full real name), your quiz results/grades for that class's assignments, and a
random, app-generated device identifier (so a returning device rejoins as the
same student). No email, no account, no contacts, no location.
- Who can see it: your teacher (the class owner) can see your nickname and grades.
- Control / deletion: you can leave the class at any time in the app. Your
teacher can remove you, and deleting the class removes all student data in it.
Retention: classroom data is kept while the class exists and is deleted when the
teacher deletes the class (or on request — see Contact).
Crash & error diagnostics (optional, anonymous)
To find and fix bugs, the app can send anonymous, technical-only diagnostic
reports to our own server (diag.kondev.app) when something goes wrong:
- What is sent: the error message and stack trace, app version, device model, OS
version, UI language, and a random, app-generated "install id".
- What is NOT sent: no name, email, account, location, or contacts; no learning
content; nothing that identifies you. The install id is random and not linked to
any personal identity — it only tells one device's reports apart.
- Control: on by default but you can turn it off in Settings → "Send anonymous
diagnostics".
- Retention: diagnostic reports are automatically deleted after 90 days.
Purchases
The optional one-time "Pro" unlock is processed entirely by Google Play Billing.
We never see or store your payment details. A purchase is tied to your store account
and can be restored via "Restore purchases". Purchases sit behind a simple adult-check
gate.
Age & Classrooms
The app is intended for users aged 13 and older. It is not directed to children
under 13. Classrooms are meant to be used under a teacher's or school's direction;
teachers are responsible for using nicknames (not full real names) and for having any
consent required by their school or local law before asking students to join. If we
learn we have collected data from a child under 13 without appropriate consent, we
will delete it. Any future changes will be reflected here before they take effect.
